Phat Sudz didn't start as a business plan. It started because I wanted better soap.
I have sensitive skin and I battle eczema, so I needed soap that actually felt good on my skin—soap made with care, real ingredients, and a process that wasn't rushed or watered down. What started as necessity turned into a deep appreciation for traditional soapmaking and the satisfaction of creating something from scratch with my own hands.
I fell in love with the cold process method because it forces you to slow down and pay attention. You have to understand your oils. You have to respect the process. There's no hiding mistakes and no cutting corners, and I like it that way.
When I was creating my recipes, I wanted something different. Something fabulous. I didn't want to use goat's milk or whatever trendy ingredient was having a moment. I wanted something nobody else was doing, but that was actually beneficial for skin. Then it hit me: mushrooms.
My oldest daughter and I have matching mushroom tattoos. I love mushroom decor, mushrooms in nature, everything mushroom (except eating them). Once the idea came to me, I researched mushrooms and skincare and discovered how skin-supportive functional mushroom extracts actually are. It was perfect—something I genuinely love that also does real work for skin.
Every bar of Phat Sudz is made by hand, in small batches. I use organic base oils, functional mushroom extracts, and intentional scent choices. Some soaps are scented with essential oils, some with blends, and some with skin-safe fragrance oils—each chosen based on how it performs. This is handmade soap, made the way I want to make it.
